July 29, 2011 - Another Milestone Reached

Jason went down to the O.R. today, and as a result he crossed a major milestone. He received a specialized treatment, that is intended to promote natural skin growth over his wounds. The doctor who did the procedure is considered one of the premier experts with this, so we are all very hopeful for the out come. The original plan, as explained to us last week, was to do this and then allow him two weeks "rest." The plan now is to monitor more closely with check ups every 2 or 3 days, depending on a few outward signs they also monitor. A check every couple of days is a lot better than daily trips to the PACU, so we're pretty happy with it - as is Jason. For the next two days he will be limited to what he can do, and that is rolls in his bed and getting out on his cart. He won't be able to get in his chair until Monday or Tuesday at the soonest. That's OK though, as he will still be able to do other things for his PT.

Jason went down at about 06:00 this morning and didn't get back to his room until just a little after 15:00 (3pm), so he was gone for over 8 hours. Linda and I were in his room doing a little tidying up and just doing our best to make the time go by. Jason came in to the room and looked like he was uncomfortable and we found out later why. Apparently with the procedure one of the final steps is to suture on a protective membrane over the wound so that the treatment stays in place. Jason said he felt like he was being poked by about 100 needles and the doctor said he was just about right, and there really wasn't much else they could do, except to give him some pain meds and tomorrow it would be more comfortable. By the time Linda and I left this evening he was already feeling better, so by tomorrow I am sure it won't be anywhere near as much discomfort as it was when he first came back.

He really didn't have any outside visitors today, though it must be getting real close to the merge with Walter Reed because a few of the doctors and nurses he has been working with are transferring to other duty locations. This is to make room for the Walter Reed folks who will be coming to National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) over the next few weeks. We're looking forward to the merger, as we've heard some good things, though it was sad to see some of the familiar faces depart. I guess that is just one of the aspects of progress. Of course, eventually Jason will be leaving too, so all things work out in the end.

Thank you, to all for the continued support and prayers, we really do appreciate it.

  5. Sunny shared your story with a group we belong to and I have been spending a few hours reading your blogs. I didn't finish them all but read a few months of them. I am so amazed at the strength of you and Jason, you are both an inspiration and I thank you for sharing Jason's journey. My thoughts and prayers are with you all and I do hope that one day I'll be reading about Jason riding that hand cranked bike in the Marine Warrior Games...I'm sure pulling for him. Jason, thank you for your service to our country and I pray your wounds continue to heal so you can ride that bike, swim/snorkel, ride the rapids, whatever else you set your mind to doing. George, I look forward to reading your future blogs and especially to read about further progress.
