10 Alive Day (10 Years after the blast)

Wow! It has been 10 years today, that Jason was injured and despite all the expectations from the medical folks, he's still alive and as positive and active as ever. Most of you are aware that he is into sled-hockey and that we haven't been able to get out and play for over a year now. There is a positive side to all this, though, as the timing of the shut downs and the length of the pandemic. It began just as Jason's team (the Ducks) was getting ready to go to the championship tournament, in Philadelphia, when everything was shut down. This meant that because they were defending champions they simply maintained the title. Then the following season was cancelled so the third year they have kept the title as well... trouble is that no- body wants to keep it that way. They would rather be out there on the ice and having some real games and doing what they do best... PLAY HOCKEY! We do understand now, that the games are very likely to begin again soon, so everybody is doing their best to stay in good shape and ready to play again.

Otherwise, Jason has been keeping himself busy with other interests, such as shooting and raising vegetables. He has even begun planting Carolina Reaper - so he can make some hot sauce. The Carolina Reaper is considered about the hottest pepper out there and we have some raised flower beads that do a great job of not letting the gophers get to them - actually I don't believe they would be interested in trying to eat them anyway. As for the shooting, we have only been able to get out to the range a few times and it is always fun. Jason was able to acquire  a new rifle and it needed some work. A friend of ours happens to be one of the few people who knows how to work on this particular rifle, or knows the right people to get in touch with and they got the rifle working. It was determined that the first time it has ever been shot was when Jason fired it for the first time. He had an amazingly large smile on his face when that happened.

Linda and I are still getting things done, and doing our best to help create a "normal" life for Jason and the girls. Sometimes it is more of a challenge than we would like but we still have a good time doing it. Linda is very much involved with The Blue Star Mothers and I get to get out on my bicycle frequently enough. We don't get to have as much of a social life as we would like, but we do have friends that we stay in touch with and do our best to get folks over here to spend some time with Jason - we take care to make sure it is safe and disinfected. We didn't have the opportunity to celebrate his 10 year mark so we're now looking at just going for the 11-year celebration.

Jason had to head out to Colorado, to Littleton, to get a new prosthetic. We drove out and spend nine days there and hope that this new Wearable allows for better healing. He was also able to have a new seat/bucket created for his sled. When the two new pieces were placed together they fit like they were supposed to and this made Jason very happy. I am hoping that the ice rinks will be opening soon, for play, so that he can test out everything and get some stick time on the ice. During this time the coach has been keeping the players and everybody associated with the team, busy doing other activities. There may be more about this on some of the sports channels, as we continue to follow the coach's instructions. Our sponsor team, the Ducks, was very excited to hear about what we are doing so this is a really good thing.

Well, that is about all for now. I know I could probably get into more stuff but I'm getting tired and it is getting late. Take care and stay positive and I'll do my best to get more posts going.

  1. Thank you for your update. I always enjoy reading about how Jason and the entire family are doing. I talked a bit about Jason with my 5th grade class. We are reading about the American Revolutionary War up through the Vietnam War. We don't get into too much detail in 5th grade. Several students have grandparents who fought in the Vietnam war. We talked about both the physical and emotional toll it takes on soldiers ... which led to me mentioning Jason including the sled hockey (which some of my students are familiar with). Take care!
