March 17, 2012 - Happy St. Patrick's Day (take 2)

Well today was totally different than last year, and much better as far as I am concerned. We really didn't do much for St. Patrick's Day, because tomorrow we have been invited over to a friend's home for a corned beef and cabbage dinner. I think it will be nice, as it will be the first time for Jason to get out and socially interact with folks in a home setting. Well, we did have Jason over to dinner a couple of times when we were still at the Fisher House, but that still isn't the same thing.

It actually rained most of the day today, and a couple of times it rained pretty hard, especially for around here. We went over to the pet store, where they hold dog adoptions every Saturday. I think he would have liked to have adopted one of the dogs that was there, but realized it wasn't a good idea, after we talked about it. With the idea of him going in for surgery(ies), sometime in the relative near future, it wouldn't be a good idea to have a puppy around right now. We'll probably just need to wait for a good service dog to come available, at the right time, and then he can get his dog. Would be nice to know when/if the surgeries are to take place, because right now we just don't know.

Because of the rain we stayed inside most of the rest of the day, and didn't do too much. Then again, if we don't do too much the benefit is there isn't too much to clean up afterward. I suspect that tomorrow will be similar, as long as the weather stays the same as today. With that, I'll close and wish everyone a Happy St. Patrick's Day.

    When you are ready for a new dog, you may want to talk to Ryan at: Ryan.PawsForACause@gmail.com. He's a veteran himself and trains service dogs specifically for veterans and he also trains their owners to train them. He's up here in the Pleasanton/Livermore area but he may be a good resource for you. My daughter and I met him on a Bart ride into the City and he is such a nice guy. He was traveling with his own service/therapy dog and she was soooo sweet.

10 Alive Day (10 Years after the blast)

 Wow! It has been 10 years today, that Jason was injured and despite all the expectations from the medical folks, he's still alive and as positive and active as ever. Most of you are aware that he is into sled-hockey and that we haven't been able to get out and play for over a year now. There is a positive side to all this, though, as the timing of the shut downs and the length of the pandemic. It began just as Jason's team (the Ducks) was getting ready to go to the championship tournament, in Philadelphia, when everything was shut down. This meant that because they were defending champions they simply maintained the title. I know I haven't been keeping up with the blog and posting as often as I said I would, but I guess that's what happens when the days really do start to seem more normal, and don't feel like there is much to update about. Then when there is something exciting going on, by the time I can get to the blog I'm pretty well worn out for the day and then I'm slow to get to it afterward. Well, I will continue to provide updates, as I can and we'll just have to see where it takes us. Jason's sled hockey season is over and he had a great time with it. He was not able to go to the final tournament, in Chicago, due to travel challenges. First challenge was simply getting there - there really isn't any way to get there, that doesn't simply totally wear him out, and then he needs the next day to recover. Again, I have no reasonable excuse other than to say I got side tracked. On the last post I mentioned that Jason had gotten injured, while playing in the hockey tournament. Well, as it turned out it was a more serious injury than either of us had suspected. The outcome was that he lost some soft tissue and a section of his pelvic bone was exposed (about the size of a quarter) and he is now required to have a wound-vac so that it can heal properly. This means that he has to spend most of his time in bed and can only be up in his chair for no more than 20 minutes at a time, and that followed by hours of rest time. The rest time is for the injury, and not necessarily for Jason, as he isn't tired. As you can imagine, he gets very board with this "life style" and wants to get up and go do something.
