May 30, 2011 - A slow day - the way we like it

Jason received a few visitors today, one of which was the assistant to the Commandant of the Marines, and his wife. They came in and had a nice visit with Jason, and as it happens, we(Bridgette, Stacy, Jackie, Mom, Dad, Yvonne, and Jeff) all were there, and Bridgette and the General's wife seemed to have hit it off pretty well. Again, we took pictures and got their input into Jason's famous signature Red Book. They stayed for a few minutes and even had time to play a little with the girls, Stacy and Jackie.

In general, Jason is feeling pretty good. He has gotten to the point where he is the director of his own medical treatment, so-to-speak. He tells his nurses what to do; when to do it; and sometimes even how to do it. I am still the number one, when it comes to moves and positioning in the bed, but for just about everything else he is doing it more and more on his own, which makes us all pretty happy. It shows that he is knowledgeable about what his needs are, and that he isn't holding back when he sees them doing something incorrectly.

We ordered out for Chinese food tonight, as he wasn't too satisfied with the hospital food. I let him decide what was to be ordered and I called it in. They delivered right to the hospital, and considering today is a holiday, it really didn't take too long to get here. We didn't stay too late tonight, so that we could get some things ready for tomorrow, and Bridgette was able to stay later with him tonight (for those that are wondering about tomorrow... it's Jason's birthday).

I know I haven't been keeping up with the blog and posting as often as I said I would, but I guess that's what happens when the days really do start to seem more normal, and don't feel like there is much to update about. Then when there is something exciting going on, by the time I can get to the blog I'm pretty well worn out for the day and then I'm slow to get to it afterward. Well, I will continue to provide updates, as I can and we'll just have to see where it takes us. Jason's sled hockey season is over and he had a great time with it. He was not able to go to the final tournament, in Chicago, due to travel challenges. First challenge was simply getting there - there really isn't any way to get there, that doesn't simply totally wear him out, and then he needs the next day to recover. Again, I have no reasonable excuse other than to say I got side tracked. On the last post I mentioned that Jason had gotten injured, while playing in the hockey tournament. Well, as it turned out it was a more serious injury than either of us had suspected. The outcome was that he lost some soft tissue and a section of his pelvic bone was exposed (about the size of a quarter) and he is now required to have a wound-vac so that it can heal properly. This means that he has to spend most of his time in bed and can only be up in his chair for no more than 20 minutes at a time, and that followed by hours of rest time. The rest time is for the injury, and not necessarily for Jason, as he isn't tired. As you can imagine, he gets very board with this "life style" and wants to get up and go do something. We've been going in to wound-care frequently, once or twice each week, and they keep telling us, "...we'll take a look at it next week, to see what happens next....

Happy St. Patty's Day!

To day was a good day for Jason, as they removed the breathing tube from his mouth and throat, and his medications and pain meds were lowered. All this lead to him being able to begin talking to us, and have visitors, other than from family. On top of that, Bridgette came with the girls today (she went a short time ago to go pick them up), so he'll be able to see and speak with them as well. Of course tomorrow is Friday, and he is scheduled for another surgery (I'll talk more about that later) so we will need to go visit with him early in the morning, and then later tomorrow we will be able to visit with him again. He was visited by a bunch of different doctors with all of them asking him the same basic questions of, "How are you feeling? Where do you have pain? Can you tell me where you are?" etc., etc. Then came the psychiatrist, who wanted to be sure of his mental abilities and neurological issues.
